Serbia opens museum dedicated to Cyrillic script in Rača

Serbia has opened a museum dedicated to the Cyrillic script in the village of Rača near Bajina Bašta, marking a new addition to the country’s cultural tourism offering.

The Museum of Cyrillic Script is the first institution of its kind in Serbia, focusing on the preservation, study and promotion of the writing system that forms a central part of the country’s cultural identity.

Located close to the historic Rača Monastery, the museum draws on the area’s long association with literacy and manuscript production. The monastery was known for its medieval scriptorium, where important religious and literary texts were copied and preserved over centuries.

The new cultural site is designed to appeal to both domestic and international visitors, combining exhibitions on the history of Cyrillic with contemporary interpretations of the script. Officials said the museum is expected to strengthen Rača’s position as a cultural destination within western Serbia.

Investment in the project forms part of wider efforts to develop regional tourism infrastructure and diversify Serbia’s cultural attractions beyond major urban centres. The museum is housed in a repurposed building and integrates educational programmes alongside exhibition space, aimed at engaging younger audiences and visitors interested in linguistic heritage.

Cyrillic remains the official script of Serbia and is widely regarded as a symbol of national identity, despite the growing use of Latin script in digital communication and everyday life.

The opening of the museum reflects continued efforts to promote cultural heritage tourism in lesser-visited parts of the country, offering travellers access to historical narratives linked to language, religion and regional traditions.
