IndiGo expands into Europe with Greece flights

IndiGo has introduced direct flights between India and Greece using the Airbus A321XLR, marking the airline’s entry into long-haul narrowbody operations.

The new service links Mumbai and Delhi with Athens, positioning the carrier to tap into growing leisure demand between India and southern Europe. The deployment of the A321XLR allows IndiGo to operate sectors of around eight hours with a single-aisle aircraft, a route profile traditionally served by widebody jets.

IndiGo has configured the aircraft with 12 IndiGoStretch seats and 183 economy seats. The premium cabin offers 44 inches of pitch, additional recline, calf and foot rests, and charging points. Economy passengers also have access to personal device power and USB outlets.

Complimentary hot meals and beverages are included for all passengers, with the airline continuing its vegetarian default catering model while offering pre-booked non-vegetarian options. Alcoholic beverages are available for purchase in economy and included in the premium cabin fare. Checked baggage allowance on the Athens route includes two 23kg bags per passenger.

In-flight entertainment is delivered via wireless streaming to personal devices rather than seat-back screens, reflecting IndiGo’s cost-conscious model even as it expands into longer sectors.

The Athens service represents a shift in IndiGo’s network strategy. Known primarily for short- and medium-haul operations across India and nearby international markets, the airline is using the A321XLR’s extended range to test thinner long-haul routes without the operating costs associated with widebody aircraft.

Greece has emerged as an increasingly popular outbound destination for Indian travellers, while the route also opens onward connectivity opportunities through Athens into other parts of Europe.

IndiGo has placed substantial orders for the A321XLR as part of its broader fleet renewal and expansion plan. The aircraft type is expected to support further long-range narrowbody routes as the airline builds its presence in Europe.
