UN Tourism receives 265 applications from 65 countries for sixth Best Tourism Villages edition

UN Tourism has closed applications for the sixth edition of its Best Tourism Villages initiative, receiving 265 submissions from 65 countries, with results due to be announced in the third quarter of 2026.

Europe led submissions with 81 applications from 24 countries, followed by Asia and the Pacific with 78 from 16 countries, the Americas with 58 from 12 countries, the Middle East with 33 from seven countries and Africa with 18 from six countries.

Since its launch in 2021, the initiative has attracted more than 1,000 applications from over 100 countries. The Best Tourism Villages Network currently unites 319 rural destinations worldwide, including more than 230 villages officially recognised as Best Tourism Villages and 83 participating in the Upgrade Programme, representing 65 countries across five world regions.

Applications are evaluated by an independent Advisory Board of global experts against criteria spanning sustainability, governance, cultural and natural heritage, infrastructure and community wellbeing. The villages recognised as Best Tourism Villages 2026 will be announced in the third quarter of the year at a UN Tourism event.

As part of the Tourism for Rural Development Programme at UN Tourism, the initiative seeks to harness tourism as a catalyst for rural prosperity, resilience and community wellbeing, supporting approaches that align with the Sustainable Development Goals.

Member States may nominate up to eight candidate villages through their respective National Tourism Administrations. Villages that do not yet meet all criteria for recognition may participate in the Upgrade Programme, receiving tailored guidance and technical support to close identified gaps.

“Tourism is a proven game changer for rural communities,” said UN Tourism Secretary-General Shaikha Al Nuwais. “With our Best Tourism Villages we are showcasing the very best examples, where it’s keeping traditions alive, supporting small businesses or preserving nature. Now we want to expand our network and give tourists even more chances to enjoy authentic experiences that make a real difference when they travel.” — UN Tourism, February 27
