Travel marketplace Wego partnered with the Azerbaijan Tourism Board on a destination campaign to promote Azerbaijan to travellers across the Middle East and North Africa, the company said on June 30.
The tie-up reflects competition among emerging destinations for the GCC outbound market, where operators are courting regional travellers seeking cultural familiarity alongside varied experiences, and where Azerbaijan has positioned itself as an accessible short-haul option.
Dubai-based Wego, which describes itself as the largest online travel marketplace in MENA, said the campaign would spotlight Azerbaijan’s culture, nature, leisure and seasonal offerings, from the city life of Baku and the historical character of Shaki to mountain escapes at Shahdag and wellness retreats.
The campaign will run across Wego’s digital platforms through destination content, storytelling, influencer collaborations and travel inspiration tailored to seasonal demand.
“Azerbaijan continues to attract travellers from across MENA thanks to its unique blend of cultural familiarity, diverse experiences, and ease of travel. From vibrant city experiences in Baku to scenic mountain landscapes and wellness escapes, the destination offers something for every type of traveller while maintaining a sense of connection and comfort that many visitors from the region value,” said Mamoun Hmidan, chief business officer at Wego.
The campaign will also feature Azerbaijan’s culinary scene, local traditions, outdoor activities and family experiences aimed at GCC and wider MENA travellers.
“We are pleased to collaborate with Wego to further strengthen Azerbaijan’s presence among travelers from the Middle East and North Africa. The market continues to show strong interest in destinations that combine culture, nature, leisure, and accessibility. Through this partnership, we aim to bring greater visibility to the unique experiences visitors can enjoy across Azerbaijan throughout the year,” said Florian Sengstschmid, chief executive of the Azerbaijan Tourism Board.
Wego also operates WegoPro, a business travel platform, and WegoBeds, a MENA-focused bedbank, and is backed by Tiger Global, Ares Management, Square Peg Capital, MBC Group and Arqaam Capital.
Why it matters for the trade
The campaign signals where MENA outbound demand is heading, with Azerbaijan leaning on proximity, cultural comfort and year-round product to capture GCC travellers. For trade partners, Wego’s data-led targeting and influencer activation offer a route to a market increasingly built around seasonal and experience-driven itineraries rather than peak-season city breaks.
