International travel adds GBP88.5bn ($118bn) to the UK economy and supports more than 1.4mn jobs, trade bodies ABTA and UKinbound said on September 28.

The two bodies argue that inbound and outbound travel prop each other up, with outbound demand supplying the passenger volumes that sustain international routes and many regional airports. They are pressing for action on employment costs, business rates, Air Passenger Duty and visa costs, as British holidaymakers already respond to cost pressures with a surge in domestic bookings.

The figures, measured in gross value added, were presented at a joint reception at the Labour Party Conference on September 27 attended by more than 50 guests. Tourism Minister Stephanie Peacock spoke at the event, which was hosted by Chris Webb, chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Tourism and Hospitality.

“We emphasised the catalytic role that outbound travel has in driving jobs and growth across the entirety of the UK, including by providing the travel volumes that underpin international routes and supporting regional airports across the country,” said Luke Petherbridge, director of public affairs at ABTA.

Joss Croft, CEO of UKinbound, said the discussions “highlighted the importance of ensuring tourism is recognised as a strategic growth sector, with policies that strengthen the UK’s competitiveness, improve international connectivity and support business growth.” It was the first such reception the two bodies have held at the conference.

ABTA, The Travel Association, represents UK travel agents and tour operators. UKinbound represents businesses that serve international visitors to the UK.
