Astana builds year-round appeal as events and architecture draw global travellers

Astana is positioning itself as a year-round destination, combining large-scale events, futuristic architecture and growing tourism infrastructure in Kazakhstan’s capital, as visitor numbers rise and international visibility increases, Euronews reported on May 27.

Built on the northern steppe and designated capital in 1997, Astana has developed into a political and economic centre that also hosts international forums, concerts and cultural gatherings. The city staged more than 500 events in a recent year, contributing to a 13% increase in tourist arrivals, according to local tourism authorities.

The destination’s appeal is anchored in its modern urban design. Landmarks such as the Bayterek Tower and the tent-like Khan Shatyr complex form part of a skyline defined by large-scale architectural projects, while the Ishim River divides the city into historic and newly developed districts.

Astana’s events calendar has become a central driver of inbound travel. International performances and conventions have been used to attract visitors from neighbouring markets and beyond, positioning the city as a regional hub for meetings and cultural programming.

Tourism infrastructure has expanded alongside this growth. The city now offers more than 200 hotels and a wide range of cultural venues, supported by transport links and visitor services aimed at short-stay international travellers. Foreign visitors typically spend around three days in the capital, combining business and leisure travel.

Authorities are also promoting Astana’s diversity of experiences, from gastronomy rooted in steppe traditions to contemporary dining and retail within large mixed-use developments. The city hosts festivals, concerts and exhibitions throughout the year, reinforcing its positioning beyond seasonal travel.

Kazakhstan has identified tourism as a priority sector, with Astana playing a central role in business and cultural travel segments alongside wider national offerings that include ecological and heritage tourism.

Officials describe the city as a platform for international dialogue and exchange, underpinned by its role as host of global congresses and diplomatic events, as Astana continues to expand its profile in Central Asia’s travel sector.
