Indonesia to roll out national Tourism Safety Program across destinations

Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism is set to launch a nationwide Tourism Safety Program aimed at raising safety standards across the country’s tourist destinations, Antara News reported on May 2.

The programme is designed to build the knowledge and skills of tourism workers, with a focus on risk mitigation and emergency response, while establishing standardised safety procedures for visitors.

Martini Mohamad Paham, the ministry’s Deputy for Resources and Institutional Affairs, said the tourism sector was shifting, with travellers now seeking more than scenic destinations but also authentic, safe, and memorable experiences.

The programme also requires cross-sector coordination, with provincial tourism offices identified as the primary drivers of implementation at the regional level.

Ika Kusuma Permana Sari, the ministry’s Assistant Deputy for Community Capacity Building, said regional preparedness was central to delivering the programme.

The training initiative also serves as a platform for developing workers who understand occupational health and safety principles alongside environmental sustainability, with the ministry leading technical and administrative implementation to ensure tangible benefits for destination development.

The launch comes as Indonesia’s tourism reputation faces scrutiny. South Korea issued a travel advisory for Bali earlier this year, and in April two tourists were airlifted from a cliff on the island — incidents that have kept safety standards in the public eye.

Martini Mohamad Paham said the goal extended beyond compliance. “Our challenge is no longer just about offering beautiful destinations, but ensuring that tourists have a safe, comfortable, and high-quality experience.”
