Kenyan travellers can now buy international mobile data through a Kwetu eSIM mini app on Safaricom’s (NSE:SCOM) M-PESA super app, Capital FM reported on September 29.
The integration lets users pay for eSIM data from their M-PESA balances, removing the need for an international debit or credit card. It puts a roaming alternative inside a payments platform that Safaricom said had 41mn active customers in its financial year to March 2026. Kenya has already moved on the inbound side, endorsing TouristTap, a cashless payment platform for international visitors.
“Travelers want instant, reliable data without the friction of physical SIM swaps or complicated payment methods,” said Kevin Mwando, General Manager at Kwetu eSIM. “By bringing Kwetu eSIM into the M-PESA Super App, we are making global connectivity as effortless as sending money back home.”
Kwetu eSIM sells data packages for more than 200 destinations. Travellers can activate a plan before departure and use data on arrival through partner networks, while keeping their main Safaricom number active for calls and SMS.
Users can choose local, regional or global plans depending on their destination and trip length, with regional options including East African Community bundles.
Kwetu eSIM is a Kenyan travel technology company that launched its digital SIM platform in August, pairing international plans with local payment methods such as M-PESA. Safaricom is Kenya’s largest mobile operator and runs M-PESA, and is listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange.
