Organisers of the Lake of Stars Malawi Arts Festival announced on September 4 that the event will be postponed until 2027, citing financial difficulties in securing sufficient backing for this year’s edition, Malawi24 reported.
Rising operational costs, foreign-exchange shortages, funding cuts and broader business challenges made it difficult to raise the financial support needed for the 2026 festival, organisers said. The decision followed an assessment of the country’s economic conditions and the level of funding secured for the event.
“Proceeding with a major event without sufficient financial backing would expose the festival and those who depend upon it to an unacceptable level of financial risk,” organisers said, cited by Malawi24.
Ticket holders will receive full refunds, with details of the process to be communicated through the festival’s official channels, organisers said. They apologised to ticket holders, partners and supporters for the inconvenience and thanked them for their patience.
Organisers said the postponement is intended to protect the festival’s long-term future rather than end its place on Malawi’s cultural calendar, with the extra time allowing them to reassess their approach and strengthen local and international partnerships ahead of the 2027 edition, according to Malawi24.
Established in 2003, Lake of Stars has grown into one of Malawi’s most prominent cultural events, drawing Malawian and international artists alongside audiences, tourists, businesses and cultural organisations, Malawi24 reported. The festival also generates business for service providers in hospitality, tourism and transport, meaning stakeholders in those sectors will now wait until 2027 for its return.
