Marriott to bring Ritz-Carlton to Nepal in $100mn Kathmandu development

Marriott International (MAR) is set to open its first Ritz-Carlton property in Nepal, with CG Hospitality Global breaking ground on a $100mn luxury hotel and mixed-use development in central Kathmandu in March.

The Ritz-Carlton Kathmandu will be built on a nine-ropani (approximately 4,578 square metres) plot near Darbar Marg in Thamel, Kathmandu’s central tourist district, and ranks among the largest single hospitality investments in Nepal’s history. The development will include ultra-luxury hotel suites, branded residences and a casino. Travel And Tour World

The hotel will feature 150 rooms, including 30 suites, five dining venues, an outdoor swimming pool, a fitness centre, The Ritz-Carlton Spa and more than 1,100 square metres of meeting and event space. The project is expected to be completed by mid-2029, with room rates projected to exceed $1,000 per night once operational. Routestrip

The signing ceremony was attended by David Marriott, Chairman of the Board of Marriott International, and Binod Chaudhary, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of CG Corp Global, along with Rahul Chaudhary, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of CG Hospitality Global, and senior Marriott executives from the Asia Pacific region. A second agreement was also signed to bring The Westin Kathmandu to the capital, also comprising 150 rooms and suites and located around seven kilometres from Tribhuvan International Airport. Both projects are targeted for completion by 2031 and will add approximately 300 rooms to Marriott’s Nepal portfolio. Routes

Marriott had no presence in Nepal seven years ago. It now operates five properties in the country and has signed agreements for at least four more, spanning brands from the youth-focused Moxy to the ultra-premium Ritz-Carlton and Luxury Collection. Wizz Air

“The launch of The Ritz-Carlton in Kathmandu underscores our commitment to elevating Nepal’s tourism sector to a world-class standard,” said Rahul Chaudhary, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of CG Hospitality Global. “This project reflects our confidence in the nation’s growth and our ambition to contribute to job creation and high-quality tourism.” — Yatra Magazine, March 29
