A new network of restored hiking trails across the Peloponnese has opened access to Messinia, one of Greece’s least-explored regions, ahead of Europe’s autumn hiking season, Peloponnese Trails said.
The Peloponnese Trail Network spans more than 2,000 kilometres of routes across the wider region, linking restored historic footpaths and mule tracks. Among the new routes is the Messinian Trail, a 260-kilometre path connecting Natura 2000 protected sites with archaeological and cultural landmarks, passing through stone villages, Kalamata olive groves, wetland bird habitats and stretches of coastline. The route follows the legendary journey of King Nestor, ruler of Pylos in Homer’s Odyssey, taking in Methoni Castle and Voidokilia Beach, both featured in Christopher Nolan’s recent film adaptation of the epic.
The sustainability-focused destination of Costa Navarino sits within reach of several access points along the trail, offering transfers that allow guests to walk selected sections before returning to one of its three resorts each evening. Accessible stages include the 55-kilometre route from the archaeological site of Ancient Messini to the harbour town of Pylos, a 12-kilometre stretch from Pylos to Voidokilia Beach, a 32-kilometre route from Ancient Messini to Chora via the Palace of Nestor, an 18-kilometre path from Chora to Voidokilia Beach, and an eight-kilometre section connecting Gialova Lagoon to Pylos via Old Navarino Castle.
Costa Navarino said it can provide trail maps, private transfers, pre- and post-hike spa treatments, and food and wine experiences drawing on local Messinian produce, alongside seasonal activities such as the traditional olive harvest and olive oil tastings. Accommodation options include the adults-only W Costa Navarino in Navarino Bay, The Westin Costa Navarino, aimed at families, and The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort offering private beachfront villas.
