Wyoming does not do things quietly. The least densely populated state in the contiguous United States, it sits on more than 18 million acres of public land, thousands of miles of trails and some of the darkest night skies in the country. This summer, a run of milestone anniversaries and new openings gives travellers more reason than usual to pay attention.
The biggest headline belongs to Devils Tower, the volcanic rock column that rises 386 metres above the Belle Fourche River in the state’s north-east corner. America’s first national monument turns 120 this year, a milestone that puts one of the country’s most singular landscapes back in the conversation for summer itineraries. Not far from it, Sinks Canyon State Park holds Wyoming’s first International Dark Sky Park designation, and on clear nights the state’s remoteness delivers skies that are increasingly rare in a world of spreading light pollution.

For visitors who prefer their wildlife unfiltered, Wyoming delivers. Bison, elk, moose, pronghorn and wild horses all roam across public lands, with Grand Teton and Yellowstone providing the most concentrated viewing opportunities in the American West. The state’s rivers, lakes, streams and reservoirs add thousands of kilometres of fishing water to the offer, including a new arrival this summer: HoneyFly, a family-owned outfitter, meadery and fly-fishing destination opening in Riverton, giving anglers something genuinely new to explore.
The guest ranch side of Wyoming’s summer offer gets its own moment in 2026. Triangle X Ranch, the only dude ranch operating within the boundaries of Grand Teton National Park, is marking its centennial this season. A hundred years of riding, wrangling and hosting guests against a backdrop of the Tetons is a difficult combination to compete with.

Hiking rounds out the picture, with options running from high alpine routes and mountain lakes to gentler trails through state parks and national forests, covering enough ground to fill itineraries of any length or ambition.
