Guyana outlines ambition to become regional flight hub

Guyana is advancing plans to position itself as a regional aviation hub, with authorities convening stakeholders in Georgetown to develop a national aviation master plan.

The initiative brings together government officials, aviation authorities and industry participants to map out long-term expansion of the country’s air transport sector. Central to the plan is strengthening connectivity, increasing passenger and cargo traffic and improving infrastructure to support growing demand.

Officials have linked the strategy to Guyana’s rapid economic growth and rising international interest, particularly as tourism and investment flows increase. The government has been actively engaging airlines and global aviation partners to expand route networks and position the country as a gateway between the Caribbean and South America.

Infrastructure development remains a key component of the plan. Upgrades at Cheddi Jagan International Airport, including a new arrivals terminal and expanded facilities, are expected to support higher passenger volumes and improve the visitor experience. Parallel investments in regional airstrips and domestic airports aim to improve internal connectivity and link remote tourism destinations.

Guyana has also been expanding its network of air services agreements with international partners, creating the regulatory framework for airlines to launch new routes and increase frequency. Authorities have said these agreements are essential to building an internationally connected aviation system and attracting additional carriers.

For the travel industry, the hub strategy is expected to support more direct connections and multi-destination itineraries across the Caribbean and northern South America. Improved access could also strengthen Guyana’s positioning as an eco-tourism destination, with sites such as Kaieteur Falls and the Rupununi region drawing increased interest.

The aviation master plan is intended to provide a long-term roadmap for coordinated sector growth, aligning infrastructure, policy and airline partnerships as Guyana seeks to expand its role in regional air travel.
