China’s Wuhan hosts World Youth Development Forum to draw global talent

Wuhan

Wuhan in Chian is hosting the 2026 World Youth Development Forum from June 15 to 17, using the event to court young people worldwide and present itself as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, state newspaper China Daily reported on June 16.

The forum positions the central Chinese city, a frontrunner in the optics and chip industries, as a “City of Youth”, as Wuhan competes with larger Chinese metropolises to retain graduates and attract international talent against a backdrop of weak domestic job markets and rising youth unemployment.

The capital of Hubei province sits at the convergence of the Yangtze and Hanjiang rivers and has a population of more than 10mn. Water areas account for a quarter of its territory, and the city holds 1,050 parks and 2,500 kilometres of greenways.

Wuhan is China‘s third-largest hub of intellectual resources, home to 95 higher education institutions including Wuhan University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology. One in 10 residents is a college student, and about 300,000 fresh graduates stay in the city each year to work or start businesses. It ranks eighth globally in the Nature Index Science Cities rankings.

The city hosts the Optics Valley of China and is the world’s largest manufacturing hub for optical fibres and cables. Pillar industries including optoelectronic information, automobiles and biomedicine are moving towards the trillion-yuan level, alongside emerging sectors covering the digital economy, quantum technology, commercial aerospace, 6G and hydrogen energy.

During the forum, delegates will visit innovation platforms including Hubei laboratories, Dongfeng Motor Group, the Hubei Humanoid Robot Innovation Center and a Xiaomi smart home appliances factory.

Participants will also visit cultural sites including the Yellow Crane Tower, Hubei Provincial Museum and the Changjiang Civilization Museum, and take part in Youth Market and Dragon Boat Festival heritage activities.

Wuhan lies within a four-hour high-speed rail trip or two-hour flight of 80% of China’s major cities. Huahu Airport ranks first in Asia among dedicated cargo airports.
