Hong Kong’s tourism board has launched a movie tourism guide covering more than 100 filming locations from 50 films, it said on October 21.
Hong Kong Good Take comes as visitor numbers climb, with arrivals reaching about 4.03mn in September, up 22% year-on-year, according to the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB). It follows the board’s Taste Hong Kong gourmet guide earlier this year and adds to a drive to give visitors fresh reasons to come, from themed neighbourhood trails to international business events such as LEAP East.
“Hong Kong Good Take combines film and TV culture with tourism promotion to further unlock the potential of movie tourism,” HKTB chairman Peter Lam said. Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law said the government would keep turning “iconic movie themes into tourism experiences”, building on the Kowloon Walled City and Yau Ma Tei Police Station cinematic journeys.
The guide links filming locations with nearby attractions and restaurants, with movie-themed itineraries for Old Town Central, Sham Shui Po and Yau Ma Tei on the Discover Hong Kong website. Featured sites include Star Ferry Pier from Cold War, Temple Street from C’est la vie, mon chéri, Yim Tin Tsai from The Killer, and The Peak and the Central–Mid-Levels Escalator from The Dark Knight.
HKTB will work with the trade to roll out movie-themed guided experiences that combine film locations, neighbourhood walks and dining. Feature stories will follow in phases, starting with trails on the screen careers of Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui and a Taste Hong Kong through Cinema food series, with later tie-ins to events such as the Hong Kong International Film Festival.
HKTB is a government-subvented body set up in 2001 to market Hong Kong as a destination worldwide. It took over from the Hong Kong Tourist Association, established in 1957.
