Atlantic Airways, the national airline of the Faroe Islands, has placed a firm order for two Airbus (EPA:AIR) A320neo aircraft, Airbus said on October 27.
The order moves the carrier closer to a single-type fleet. It now flies four A320 Family jets, two older A320ceos and two A320neos, and Airbus said a single variant would bring operational synergies and simpler maintenance.
“Our ambition is to operate an exclusively A320neo aircraft fleet in the near future, and this agreement marks a significant step towards achieving that goal,” said Niels Mortensen, chairman of Atlantic Airways.
Benoit de Saint-Exupery, Airbus executive vice president for commercial aircraft sales, said the additional jets would support the airline’s regional connectivity and its links for Faroese communities.
Airbus said the A320 Family has won more than 20,400 orders worldwide and burns at least 20% less fuel than previous-generation single-aisle aircraft. Neither company disclosed delivery dates or the value of the order.
Atlantic Airways was founded in 1987 and is based at Vagar Airport. Majority owned by the Faroese government, it flies to Denmark, Norway, Iceland and the UK and runs domestic helicopter services across the islands.
