Saudia and Air India sign MoU to widen codeshare and loyalty tie-ups

Saudia and Air India have signed a memorandum of understanding to expand strategic cooperation, building on their existing codeshare and opening the door to loyalty programme links and wider network connectivity.

The agreement was signed in Jeddah on July 23 by Ibrahim Al Omar, director general of Saudia Group, and Campbell Wilson, chief executive and managing director of Air India.

The MoU sets a framework for phased cooperation covering an expanded codeshare, closer integration between the two carriers’ networks, and exploration of operational and commercial opportunities including loyalty programmes. It also allows both sides to study extending the partnership to other airlines within their respective groups, including flyadeal and Air India Express.

Al Omar said the agreement is a strategic step to build on the existing partnership and widen cooperation, strengthening air connectivity between Saudi Arabia and India and offering more integrated and flexible travel options in step with rapid growth in traffic between the two countries. He said it supports both carriers’ growth targets and reinforces Saudia Group’s position as a global partner in developing a more connected and efficient air transport system.

Wilson said relations between India and Saudi Arabia continue to develop across multiple sectors, giving aviation a greater role in connecting the two populations, business communities and economies. As carriers operating in fast-growing markets, he said, Air India and Saudia are well placed to deepen cooperation and explore opportunities offering greater benefit to passengers.

Why it matters for the trade

The India-Saudi corridor is one of the heaviest in the Gulf, carrying labour traffic, VFR, business travel and religious travel to Makkah and Madinah, and it has historically been served through fragmented interline arrangements. An expanded codeshare gives agents cleaner single-ticket options across both networks, with the more significant prospect being the extension to flyadeal and Air India Express, which would bring low-cost feed into the same construct and change the pricing picture for the price-sensitive end of the market.

Loyalty integration matters most for corporate accounts running India-Gulf programmes.

The caution is that this is an MoU rather than a filed agreement: nothing is bookable yet, and the phased language suggests routes and frequencies will follow over months rather than weeks. Umrah operators building 2027 programmes should watch the flyadeal element in particular.
