Slovenia will stage the 2026 UEC Road European Championships from October 2 to 7, the largest cycling event in the country’s history, the Slovenian Tourist Board said in a statement on May 22.
Slovenia’s hosting of the 2026 UEC Road European Championships gives OTAs a timely tourism hook because the event should pull in thousands of international visitors, amplify global visibility, and drive spillover demand beyond the race routes. With 800 riders from more than 40 countries and strong media attention, the championships create an opportunity to sell Slovenia as a cycling destination, while also packaging hotels, transfers, and leisure add-ons for fans likely to extend their trips.
Some 800 female and male cyclists from more than 50 countries will compete in 14 races over five days, including junior and elite road races and time trials. Routes will run from Ljubljana through Šenčur, Medvode, Kranj, Preddvor, Škofja Loka, Vodice, Komenda, Mengeš, Domžale, Kamnik and Cerklje na Gorenjskem.
Organisers expect around 300,000 spectators along the routes and more than 16.5mn viewers following the championships on television and digital channels.
Slovenian riders Tadej Pogačar, Primož Roglič and Urška Žigart are expected to compete on home roads in the national team jersey.
“The European Championships will take place in a country that is experiencing a true golden age of cycling. The exceptional results achieved in recent years and the development of new generations confirm the strength and vision of a system capable of developing both top-level athletes and young talents,” Enrico Della Casa, president of the Union Européenne de Cyclisme, said.
The Slovenian Tourist Board is supporting the event with a dedicated travel and visitor information page at slovenia.info.
Slovenia has used its cycling success in recent years as a cornerstone of its international tourism positioning, with Pogačar’s Tour de France victories and Roglič’s Grand Tour wins generating sustained global media coverage for the country.
Location of events
According to a press release from 2 to 7 October, the best cyclists will take to Slovenia’s roads in their chase for the title of European champions in various age categories. Participants in the race will also include world-famous cycling stars Tadej Pogačar and Primož Roglič.

Why it matters for the trade
An event drawing 300,000 roadside spectators and 16.5mn broadcast viewers across five days in October creates a material short-break opportunity for agents and operators selling central Europe. Ljubljana and the Gorenjska region have strong existing tourism infrastructure, with the championships falling in shoulder season when accommodation availability and pricing are more favourable than peak summer. The Slovenian Tourist Board’s active promotional backing makes this a destination partner worth engaging ahead of the event.
