Travelex grows Qatar network to 19 stores as Hamad traffic hits record

Travelex store launch in Doha, Qatar

Foreign exchange retailer Travelex has opened or upgraded three outlets in Qatar, taking its network in Doha to 19 stores, the company announced on October 6.

The airport remains the core of the business. Travelex now runs 15 stores at Hamad International Airport, including mobile, dual-sided FX kiosks, and has added its first landside store there, outside the security zone. Hamad handled a record 54.3mn passengers in 2025, up 3% year on year, as Doha’s hub carrier pushed its summer network beyond 150 destinations. The other two openings target residents rather than transit passengers, with a remittance-led store aimed at Qatar’s expatriate population.

“Despite recent challenges, Qatar continues to see strong long-term momentum in international travel,” said Batu Dölay, Travelex Managing Director for the Middle East and Turkey & Southeast Asia.

At Doha Al Jadeda metro station, which sits on one of the city’s busiest transport corridors, Travelex has more than doubled its customer service points from three to seven. The store first opened in 2022.

In Doha’s historic Matar Qadeem district, the new outlet focuses mainly on remittances, letting customers send money to more than 350,000 locations worldwide. Expatriates make up about 88% of Qatar’s population.

Customers across the Doha network can access more than 45 currencies, buying on the day of travel or collecting cash pre-ordered on the Travelex website.

Travelex was founded in 1976 by Lloyd Dorfman, who opened its first store in central London. It became the first non-bank foreign exchange retailer at Heathrow in 1986 and opened at New York’s JFK in 1989. The company completed a capital and ownership restructuring in August 2020 and now operates in more than 20 countries.
