Marriott International has opened The Cape Town EDITION, a 142-key hotel on the V&A Waterfront and the brand’s first property in Africa, the company said on October 27.

EDITION already runs hotels in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Jeddah and the Red Sea. Cape Town gives it a first address on the African continent, at Quay 7 beside the V&A Waterfront’s new superyacht marina. The waterfront’s operator says the hotel opens the next chapter for its Granger Bay district.

“The opening of The Cape Town EDITION is an important milestone in the V&A Waterfront’s continued evolution and a strong expression of confidence in Cape Town as a globally competitive tourism and investment destination,” said Graham Wood, Chief Executive Officer of the V&A Waterfront.

George Fleck, Senior Vice President and Global Brand Leader of EDITION, called Cape Town “a natural home for EDITION”.

Shanghai-based studio Neri&Hu designed the hotel with Cape Town architects. Its low, pitched-roof form references the warehouses that once stood on the site. More than six million bricks were laid by hand. A central open-air cylinder, The Drum, rises to a public viewing platform facing Table Mountain.

The 142 rooms and suites include a 240-square-metre Penthouse and a 112-square-metre Harbour Suite. Cape Town gallery Southern Guild curated the art collection, which features work by Zanele Muholi.

Executive Chef Phil Carmichael, formerly of Berners Tavern at The London EDITION, leads food and beverage. The signature restaurant, Shale, works with Cape producers and carries a mainly South African wine list. EAVE sits on the rooftop beside a heated pool.

Elsewhere in South Africa, Radisson this week named its Radisson Safari Hotel Hoedspruit Africa’s first verified net zero property.

Leonie Andereya is general manager. The hotel’s ballroom holds up to 200 people, alongside a boardroom, two meeting studios and a private event terrace.
