Radisson Hotel Group’s 138-room Radisson Safari Hotel Hoedspruit in South Africa has become Africa’s first Verified Net Zero hotel, the group said on October 27.

TUV Rheinland verified the hotel against the Net Zero Methodology for Hotels, covering Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. Radisson already runs the programme in the UK and Nordic markets and targets 100 Verified Net Zero hotels by 2030.

Tim Cordon, Chief Operating Officer, Middle East, Africa and South East Asia Pacific, called the programme “an important step in making lower-carbon hospitality a practical choice.”

Inge Huijbrechts, Chief Sustainability & Security Officer, said: “Independent verification by TUV Rheinland provides a consistent framework.”

The hotel uses on-site solar and renewable guarantees of origin, with a solar wheeling agreement planned for 2027. Kitchens are electric, heat pumps supply hot water and golf carts and utility vehicles run on electricity.

All wastewater is recycled on site and the hotel aims to divert all waste from landfill. Menus carry carbon labels developed with Klimato.

Residual emissions are covered by carbon credits from the GRASS project in South Africa, procured through Greentrade.

The property sits in Limpopo province near Kruger National Park and the Blyde River Canyon. The Hoedspruit area is also home to the Cape Vulture Nature Reserve.

The hotel opened on February 1, 2024. It has a banquet hall for up to 200 guests and lies about 20 minutes from Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport.
