Indonesia has unveiled the Geopark Run Series 2026-2027, a nationwide programme designed to attract sports tourists to four UNESCO-recognised geoparks across the country, ANTARA News reported on May 23. The initiative forms part of the government’s strategy to expand sports tourism and drive visitor spending in regional destinations.
The series will take place between August 2026 and April 2027 across four geoparks: Ijen in East Java, Minangkabau in West Sumatra, Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu in West Java and Belitong in the Bangka Belitung Islands. The events are expected to draw at least 10,000 runners and visitors.
Indonesian Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said sports tourism has become a key pillar of the country’s tourism development plans. She said the Geopark Run Series combines running events with the promotion of Indonesia’s geological heritage and local community participation, while supporting sustainable tourism objectives.
According to the ministry, sports tourism accounts for around 10% of global tourism spending. The government also cited research indicating that 44% of travellers are willing to travel internationally to attend sporting events, while sports tourists spend an average of US$1,500 per trip.
The series will begin with the Ijen Geopark Run on August 23, 2026, in Banyuwangi, followed by events in Bukittinggi, Sukabumi and Belitung. Race categories will include 5km, 10km and half-marathon distances.
Organisers said the programme is intended to generate demand for accommodation, transport, food services and locally produced goods in host destinations. The events are also expected to support small businesses and community-based tourism enterprises located within the geopark regions.
Ihsan Ramadhi Putra, chairman of the Geopark Run Series organising committee, said the initiative is designed as “a healthy, inclusive and sustainable sports tourism movement” that encourages travellers to explore Indonesia’s UNESCO-recognised natural sites while contributing to local economies, ANTARA News reported.
