Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism logged IDR12.8bn ($721,100) in potential transactions from a business-to-business sales mission in the Indian city of Pune, as it works to widen its industry ties in South Asia and draw more Indian travellers, Antara reported on September 6.
The Sales Mission Pune 2026, held on September 4 at the Crowne Plaza Pune City Centre by IHG, is expected to generate an estimated 1,582 Indian tourist arrivals, part of a push to build India into a priority outbound market for Indonesian tourism beyond its established reliance on Bali.
Deputy Minister for Marketing Ni Made Ayu Marthini said the event followed Indonesia’s participation in ITB India 2026 in Mumbai, and brought 12 Indonesian tourism companies together with travel agents and tour operators from Pune and the surrounding area. Industry buyers showed particular interest in the free independent traveller (FIT), honeymoon and couples, and luxury segments.
The ministry said the campaign promoted destinations including Jakarta, Bali, Borobudur, Lake Toba, Mandalika, Labuan Bajo, Raja Ampat and Batam-Bintan, part of an effort to spread Indian visitor traffic more evenly across the archipelago rather than concentrating it on Bali.
Pune was chosen as a route into travel markets outside the larger Indian hubs of Mumbai, New Delhi and Bengaluru, targeting a growing base of technology, manufacturing and startup professionals with higher disposable incomes.
The Pune mission followed a larger showing at ITB India 2026 in Mumbai, where the ministry targeted potential visits of 6,600 travellers and transactions of IDR58.45bn, with 15 co-exhibitors taking part.
“Going forward, we will continue to strengthen collaboration with travel associations, airlines, online travel platforms, and industry players in India so that Wonderful Indonesia increasingly becomes a top-of-mind destination for Indian travellers,” said Ni Made.
