Lufthansa, Fraport open “Gate of the Future” at Frankfurt

Lufthansa and Fraport have opened a "Gate of the Future" at Frankfurt Airport, trialling live displays, tablet-equipped roaming staff and lounge-style seating.

Lufthansa (XETRA:LHA) and Fraport (XETRA:FRA) opened a “Gate of the Future” at Frankfurt Airport to test digital services and mobile boarding staff, they said on October 27.

Gate A16 in Terminal 1 will serve as a live trial for which features are rolled out to other gates at the hub. The launch follows a summer in which Frankfurt recorded its best punctuality since 2016.

“We’re committed to ensuring a premium passenger experience, not only in the air but also on the ground,” said Francesco Sciortino, a board member of Lufthansa Airlines and its Frankfurt hub manager.

Large wall monitors and 360-degree displays show departure times, boarding status, hand-luggage rules and live gate changes. QR codes link passengers to digital self-services, including the Lufthansa app.

The gate has no fixed counter. Boarding staff instead circulate with tablets that bring the airline’s boarding systems into a single interface, letting them handle seat reservations, upgrades and rebookings on the spot and trigger gate announcements centrally.

The waiting area has been refitted with sofas and artworks, along with enclosed work cubes for passengers who need privacy.

“The future of travel is emerging not in the laboratory but in actual operation,” said Dietmar Focke, Fraport’s chief operating officer. He said the aim was greater comfort for passengers, smoother processes and a stronger competitive position for Frankfurt as a hub.

The opening came on the same day as Lufthansa Group carrier SWISS launched nonstop Zurich-Bengaluru flights.

Fraport is the Frankfurt-based operator of Frankfurt Airport and runs airports in other markets. Frankfurt is the main hub of Lufthansa, Germany’s largest airline.
