Dusit International (SET:DUSIT) has added The Strand Hotel Yangon to its Dusit Collection and opened an 85-room ASAI hotel in Myanmar’s largest city, it said on November 5.
The two deals give the Bangkok-listed group a heritage luxury hotel and a lifestyle hotel with rates from $55 a night in the same city. Dusit manages both. Dusit Collection is a soft brand that lets owners keep a property’s identity without the rebranding or extensive renovation its core brands require.
The Strand opened in 1901 and was later acquired by the Sarkies brothers, who were associated with Raffles Singapore and the Eastern & Oriental Hotel in Penang. The three-storey building on Strand Road stands near the Yangon River.
It has 32 suites, from 55 sq m junior suites to the 200 sq m Strand Suite, each with 24-hour butler service. In 2019 it became the first hotel in Myanmar to receive a commemorative blue plaque from the Yangon Heritage Trust.
The 760 sq m Strand Hall holds up to 720 guests for banquets. The Strand Café and Sarkies Bar are open, and The Strand Restaurant, serving Burmese fine dining, is due to open later this year.
ASAI Yangon Sule occupies the former Thamada Hotel on Alan Pya Pagoda Street, near Yangon Central Railway Station and Bogyoke Aung San Market. Its rooms measure 15 sq m to 30 sq m, and Babette Eatery & Bar runs at street level.
Introductory rates start at $55 a night plus taxes and service charges, including breakfast for two. The offer applies to bookings made by December 31 for stays until March 31, 2027.
In June Saudia signed a special prorate agreement with Myanmar International Airlines covering travel between Saudi Arabia and Myanmar.
Dusit was established in 1948 and launched the ASAI brand in April 2018.
