Bangkok-based ONYX Hospitality Group is promoting religious heritage trails in Phuket and George Town, Penang, as it looks to draw year-round culture-led stays to its Amari and OZO hotels, the company said on October 25.
The pitch steers visitors beyond beaches to temples, clan houses and old towns, as both islands grow long-haul access, with Virgin Atlantic’s new Heathrow–Phuket flights and Malaysia banking on major events to lift arrivals.
In Phuket, the suggested route starts at Jui Tui Shrine, a centre of the island’s Chinese community and its Vegetarian Festival, before moving through the historic old town.
In George Town, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the trail begins at the Goddess of Mercy Temple and continues along the Street of Harmony, where St George’s Church, Sri Maha Mariamman Temple and Kapitan Keling Mosque stand close together. It ends at the Khoo Kongsi clan house and Armenian Street.
ONYX is pairing the routes with stays at Amari Phuket at the southern end of Patong Beach, OZO Phuket near Kata Beach and OZO Penang on Jalan Argyll, where staff recommend routes and local food stops.
ONYX Hospitality Group is a Thailand-based hotel management company that operates the Amari, OZO, Shama and Oriental Residence brands across Asia and the Middle East.
